Contagious illness forces the Bulldogs to forfeit seven matches against Geneva. Bulldogs win four of five non-forfeited matches but lose 57-13.
The Batavia wrestling team has battled adversity all season so it came as no surprise that Friday's Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual meet at Geneva didn't go as planned. A victory by the Bulldogs would prohibit the Vikings from winning the inaugural UEC River title outright and would force a three-way tie between the Vikings and St. Charles East. Batavia won four of the five matches it wrestled, but the Bulldogs forfeited the remaining nine matches and lost 57-13. It's just been that kind of year for the Bulldogs. There were wrestlers who quit the team before the season started. There had been voids in weight classes that made it difficult for the Bulldogs to win some of its meets. Now, finally, the team appeared ready to make …

Bulldogs drop first conference meet, 43-25.
St. Charles East's Peter Bellino hadn't gone to overtime in any of his bouts this winter before Friday night's Upstate Eight Conference meet at Batavia. The junior went and back and forth against Laren Eustace at 140 pounds, before escaping with a victory in overtime. Bellino's victory was one of many impressive ones for the Saints as they manhandled the Bulldogs most of the night, winning 43-25. "Match after match we were getting outwrestled," Batavia coach Ben Morris said. "I think we're doing a lot of the right things, but we're just getting outwrestled." Bellino said he was able to come away a victory because of his conditioning. "I think that (Eustace) is technically better than me and I think he's wrestled longer," he said. "But I've…

New coach, new wrestling room and new wrestlers are all part of the new-look Bulldogs in 2010-11.
You can't judge a book by its cover, and the same could be said about the Batavia wrestling team and its 1-9 start to the season. The Bulldogs are still adapting to first-year head coach Ben Morris. The team is young and inexperienced in high school competition. There's still a void to fill, with the loss of five sectional qualifiers a year ago, including Logan Arlis. Holes in the lineup this winter have caused the team to forfeit a handful of matches per meet. The team has been hampered by a lack of facilities: The team didn't have its wrestling room in place at the beginning of the season. And, then, there's the schedule: It's definitely not the cupcake variety. The Bulldogs have faced some of the best teams in the state, including …

Bulldogs wrestle well but forfeit points prove costly, especially in losses to Downers Grove South and Chicago Lane Tech.
The Batavia wrestling team is slowly coming to the realization that it's not going to win many meets this season. It's not because the Bulldogs don't have a bunch of good wrestlers. The Bulldogs have a lot of talent, but what they don't have is great numbers. Batavia gives away points due to forfeits and that was the case again on Saturday in a quadrangular at Naperville Central against the host Redwings as well as Downers Grove South and Lane Tech. Batavia lost to Downers Grove South 43-33, dropped a 52-22 decision to Naperville Central and enjoyed an excellent streak of victories against Lane Tech before the forfeits ultimately caught up with its effort, in a 42-36 final. "We're just short people and if we had more people we'd have a …
