Batavia Public Schools did their part this month to remember America's heroes for Veterans Day. Various ceremonies and assemblies were held across the district, with local veterans and family members of students that are currently serving. The flag-raising ceremony pictured here took place at Batavia High School. Two WWII veterans, Mr. Casey and Mr. Wagner, were in attendance. Special thanks to Debi Paradiso for the photos. A video tribute was presented to remember 20-year-old Chris Patterson, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in January during a mission in Afghanistan.
A local high school paid tribute during a Veterans Day ceremony to a 2009 graduate gone too soon. A video tribute for Spc. Christopher Patterson of North Aurora was presented Friday at West Aurora High School, the Daily Herald reports. Patterson's parents Bob and Mary, who works at the school, were present for the ceremony. Patterson was a Valparaiso University student and Indiana National Guardsman when his guard unit was called for duty in 2011. On January 6, 2012, Patterson and three other soldiers died when an improvised explosive device went off underneath their vehicle. Patterson was 20 years old.
