St. Charles Gas Line Break on Route 64 Sealed

One-inch gas line broken by contractor disrupted morning traffic on East Main Street/Route 64 in St. Charles.

2:00 p.m. Update: A gas line break along East Main Street/Route 64 brought out St. Charles firefighters and police, crews from Nicor and disrupted traffic through the construction zone Friday morning, but things were back to normal by early afternoon. The initial call to the St. Charles Fire Department went out at 9:12 a.m., and interim Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said in an email that Nicor crews already were on the scene, working on a break to a 1-inch serving Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St. A contractor had struck the line causing the break. Schelstreet wrote that Nicor representatives asked St. Charles authorities to divert traffic while they shut down the flow of gas and made repairs. “We provided traffic control with a …

Tri-Cities Gas Guide: $3.85 About as Good as it Gets This Week

Our weekly guide to help you find the lowest prices per gallon in the Tri-Cities of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

National average gasoline prices declined 4 cents per gallon of regular gasoline this week, and are down 10.6 cents a gallon from a month ago. In Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles, they're about the same as last week. AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report showed that nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline on late Wednesday was $3.640 a gallon, up slightly from $3.637 a day earlier, but down from $3.650 a week ago. The national average of a gallon of regular gas a month ago was $3.746, but was $3.923 a year ago. The highest recorded average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $4.114 on July 17, 2008. VIDEO: Easter Sunday Fire Erupts in St. Charles Home on State Avenue

FINAL UPDATE: An Easter Sunday fire caused an estimated $250,000 damage to a home on St. Charles' East Side. Here's what happened ...

A house fire at 608 State Ave. in St. Charles about 12:29 p.m. shook up the Easter Sunday for residents and neighbors on the East Side and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage. No one was injured. The St Charles Fire Department arrived at the blaze by 12:32 p.m. and found heavy smoke showing from all floors of the three-story home, according to a release from the department. “Upon entry, fire was found on all three floors,” the release states. “Due to the size of the fire, the alarm was upgraded to a first level MABAS box alarm, bringing additional assistance to the scene,” the release states. MABAS is an acronym for Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. According to the release, the fire was extinguished in about 2½ hours. But firefighters …

‘Patronize This’: City Hits St. Charles Bar With 3 Citations

The House Pub faces a fine, costs and a possible suspension of its liquor license when it appears before the St. Charles Liquor Commission over a profanity-laced incident on March 15.

The city has slapped a St. Charles bar with three liquor code citations in which the bar is accused of allowing an intoxicated man to enter and then served him a drink, leading to a profanity-laced confrontation between one of the owners and police. The House Pub, 16 S. Riverside Ave., faces fines and the possible suspension or revocation of its liquor license over the March 15 incident, according to the citation and notice of hearing the city issued this week. Accompanying the citation is a five-page police report, which includes four pages of officers’ narratives about the incident. It was not in the report, Mitch. To my knowledge, the police rarely administer a Breathalyzer or blood test to measure blood-alcohol content outside of DUI incidents. Officers are trained, however, to evaluate individuals' general level of intoxication based on such things as balance/coordination, among other factors -- surely you've seen officers have individuals do roadsie sobriety tests before.   more ›

St. Charles, Aurora Cops Nab Suspect in Smash-and-Grabs

Aurora man was arrested Friday after a smash-and-grab break-in at the St. Charles NAPA store.

Bail has been set at $130,000 for a paroled burglar who police nabbed over the weekend during a smash-and-grab-style break-in at a St. Charles auto parts store. The arrest of Mark E. Swienton, 49, of the 1300 block of Monomoy Street, Aurora, came during an Aurora police investigation that included the use of a high-tech tracking device by officers intent on solving a series of “numerous” smash-and-grab burglaries over the past two weeks, authorities said. According to a joint release issued Monday by the St. Charles and Aurora police departments, Swienton was being watched by Aurora police as he threw a large rock through the front window of NAPA Auto Parts, 203 S. 3rd St. Swienton was taken into custody at the store about 10 p.m. Friday, …

Friday Fire Damages Rural Home

Blaze in vacant home on Weber Drive in Valley View draws response from 13 emergency agencies.

A driveway full of brush and landscape materials for a two-story home located 200 feet from the roadway impeded firefighters from 13 agencies that responded Friday night to combat flames in the vacant home. No one was unjured, but the home had extensive damage. Firefighters were dispatched at 7:02 p.m. to 6N052 Weber Drive and arrived seven minutes later to find the home fully involved with flames on the second floor and fire erupting through the roof, according to an incident summary provided by the Fox River & Countryside Fire Protection District. The summary states that the materials in the driveway delayed access to the site by fire engines. But there also were building materials lying round the yard of the home. “Defensive operations …
