Batavia School District 101 might have to spend as much as $13 million to build an artificial turf field and keep sports and extracurricular practices on the school campus, the Daily Herald reports. The district had talked about taking land from Mooseheart and using elementary schools for practice fields, but Batavia Buildings and Grounds Director Pat Browne told the Batavia School Board at last week's meeting that a committee of school officials, parents and boosters would prefer to keep practice on campus. The plan calls for eliminating the arboretum on the southwest corner of the school campus, the Daily Herald said. A Chicago Tribune article said no funding has been secured for the project, although the committee did present an …

Geneva comes out on top in the first round of the 2012-13 Batavia-Geneva rivalry in low-scoring, hard-fought boys basketball game.
In a physical, tense defensive struggle, the Vikings boys basketball team held on to beat the Bulldogs 49-38 in Friday's rivalry match at Geneva. It wasn't pretty, and the game was anything but fast-paced, but it was a work of art for the Vikings, who advance to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Upstate Eight River Division. Batavia moves to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the UEC. Geneva jumped to a 12-2 start, but a basket and free throw by Luke Horton cut it to 12-5 at the end of the first quarter, and Batavia took the lead halfway through the second period on a 3-pointer by Micah Coffey. The lead changed five times in the back half of the quarter, and Batavia came out on top 20-19 with a Zach Strittmatter basket to close out the half. Geneva …

In a game that sees 12 lead changes, the Vikings come from behind to beat the Bulldogs 60-56.
The Geneva Vikings girls basketball team squeaked past Batavia 60-56 in a come-from-behind thriller Friday night at Geneva. Eight fourth-quarter points by Geneva's Abby Novak held off a 9-point fourth quarter by Batavia's Liza Fruendt, who had a brilliant game and finished with 26 points for the Bulldogs. In a fast-paced, high-scoring first quarter, Batavia sprinted to a 17-14 lead on the strength of 9 points by Fruendt and 8 by Sami Villarreal. Morgan Seberger scored 5 and Sami Pawlak 4 for the Vikings in the first quarter. In the second, the Vikings got off to a good start and Sidney Santos gave Geneva an 18-17 lead with 6:32 showing. But the third killer three-pointer by Fruendt helped Batavia to a 24-20 advantage, and a basket and free…

While the questions raised here are worth discussing, it is also worth discussing that a field turf field costs LESS over the long run plus multiple groups can use it despite the weather. Schools that have field turf have been able to increase their utilization no matter what mother nature gives us during the busy season.   more ›
