A winter storm walloped the Tri-Cities on Tuesday. Here's a recap and what to expect for the rest of the week.
It wasn't exactly a blizzard, but Tuesday's snowstorm shut down events and plans all over Kane County. Various news outlets reported a snowfall of 4.5 inches for the area. The storm climaxed in the afternoon, forcing the cancellation of many after-school activities and the early closure of public libraries in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. The storm also forced 500 flight cancellations at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports, where flights that were not canceled were delayed by as much as an hour. The snow continues today with a one-inch accumulation possible, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be 36 degrees during the day with a low of 30 in the evening and a windchill of 21. The chance of snow drops to 30 percent …

Not to fear — the National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 3 inches. But it's likely to be falling for the morning commute.
It’s not supposed to be a whopper — no “snowpocalypse” this — but between the time the snow starts late Thursday to the time it ends Friday morning, it could pose a challenge to drivers. The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday evening advising of the approaching snow, which was expected to begin dropping snow after midnight Thursday, leaving 1 to 3 inches in its wake by the time the rapidly moving system moves past the area early Friday. “There could be a three hour or so period where the fluffy snow comes down at a moderate clip,” the National Weather Service statement states. The snowfall is expected to taper off by early to midmorning. The snow likely will stick, too, the agency reports, because of the …

Waubonsee campuses close at 4:30 p.m., and hundreds of flights have been canceled. The snow is still on its way.
The looming snowstorm is taking its toll on activities this evening at Batavia Public Schools. Rotolo Middle School canceled the following activities for Dec. 20: All other activities previously scheduled at Rotolo will be held. J.B. Nelson School has canceled its Winter Concert, called "Our Gift to You." The school will reschedule this performance for a future date. "We know this will disappoint many as they have worked so hard to prepare for this event, however we felt that the safety of our families and staff is what is most important," JBN Principal Nicole Prentiss said in an online message. All Waubonsee Community College campuses will close at 4:30 p.m. The upcoming storm also caused many flights to be canceled. As of early …
The rain will change to wet snow this afternoon, and it gets worse from there. Here's what else to expect.
Expect a wet day and a dangerous, snow-filled evening in Batavia, according to the latest weather forecast. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Kane County and the larger Chicago area starting at 3 p.m. this Thursday afternoon until 3 a.m. Friday. The warning replaces the lesser Winter Storm Watch issued earlier. Rain will change to snow this afternoon, and the snowfall will be heavy at times. The heaviest snowfall and lowest visibility looks to occur in the immediate Chicago metro area between 6 and 10 p.m. today, Dec. 20, the weather service says. In the Batavia area, snow accumulation is expected to be about 4 inches. This number can fluctuate between 2 and 6 inches. Locally higher snowfall can occur if …

OK, now that we've seen the fourth-warmest January in all of history, we're getting snow and subzero temperatures, starting Feb. 10.
It's going to be a crummy commute when you come home today, Friday, Feb. 10. Expect about 1 to 2 inches in Kane County through this afternoon. Snowfall is likely this afternoon into the early evening in Kane County. There could be as much as 6 inches near the lake. The NWS-Chicago has issued a Hazardous Weather Warning to go along with the snow. There will be cool temps tonight, as well as Saturday night into Sunday morning. Looking ahead, more light snow Monday and Tuesday. All of this follows the news that we saw the fourth-warmest January of all time. Still, you have to worry a little about the plants that began to bud recently and the birds, which are already singing their spring love songs. It's been a whacky—and out of whack—winter, …

The National Weather Service says it might be, it could be ...
The chances of us having a white Christmas here in the Tri-Cities appears to be about 50-50 if you look at the National Weather Service reports, and if you have an optimistic spirit. Yes, we've got a Hazardous Weather Outlook now, but the forecast varies between snow and no snow, below freezing and above freezing for the coming week. Here's the NWS seven-day forecast for good old 41.88°N, 88.32°W, along with Patch play-by-play commentary in bold italics: Today: Increasing clouds, with a temperature falling to around 38 by 5pm. North northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Wonderful weather for walking the dog, but not looking good for a white Christmas at this point. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. …

Meteorologists report that we could get as much as 58 inches of the white stuff—twice the average annual amount.
Get a new spark plug for the snowblower and change the oil. It looks like it'll get plenty of use this winter, if the weather predicters are right. The national forecasting service Accuweather.com predicts the Chicago area could see as much as 58 inches of snowfall, twice what we get in an average winter. The snow removal team at DuPage Airport says it's ready and waiting for Old Man Winter to bring it on. "We're ready for the coming winter, thanks to efficient snow-removal operations, additional vehicles and the most effective de-icing materials on the market," airport Executive Director David Bird said. He said the airport's main runway, which is the longest in Illinois outside of O'Hare, can be cleared away in less than 45 minutes. …
