Some local business owners are optimistic about the next four years. Others are upset and concerned. Here are their comments.
Batavia business owners had reactions ranging from pleased to p.o.'d after President Barack Obama's reelection victory this week. Batavian Bob Lisberg, owner of Pockets Restaurant in Aurora, has noticed the slow but steady growth of the stock market since Obama was first elected in 2008. He hopes a second term also means prosperity. "While we have a long way to go, I think we are on the right course," he said. Although Lisberg has been able to hire more people and open a Kirk Road location since Obama was first elected, he did not want to speculate on what the reelection could mean for unemployment rates and job creation. Another Batavia business owner, Scott Salvati, is doubtful that Obama's reelection will bring more employment. He wasn'…

Jason Seelye is a systems engineer who didn't want to leave St. Charles when his company moved out East. So he stayed — and is working from home to develop mobile apps.
Jason Seelye loves his family and the St. Charles area, and when his company, Goodrich ISR Systems, asked him to move with it out East, he just couldn’t do it. “We really love the area … we didn’t want to leave the area or our family here,” said Seelye, who was a systems engineer who spent 10 years with Goodrich designing spy cameras for the military. Seelye accepted what he describes as a generous severance package and, at age 36, decided to embark on his own venture. He started Seelye Engineering in May 2012 with a focus on mobile application development. “We launched our first (and currently only) app, F-Stop Media Gallery on the Google Play Store on July 16th, 2012 and on the Amazon App Store on August 23rd, 2012,” he wrote in an email…

The president's small-business comments upset many people and gave Republican Mitt Romney a point of attack. But Barack Obama said the comments were taken out of context. What do you think? Take the Patch Poll.
President Barack Obama's recent comments about small business created a firestorm that could become a focus of the 2012 election — even as Obama and his supporters say his comments were taken out of context. "Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own," he said during a July 13 speech in Virginia. "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help ... If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." Take the Patch poll below: Who plays the most significant role in creating jobs and economic growth? That's not the entire speech, which you can read on the independent FactCheck.org. According to that post, the comments were taken out of context: "There’s no question …

The 2011 Geneva Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk is set for Friday, Dec. 2. The fun kicks off in downtown Geneva at 6 p.m. on that day. It starts with the arrival of Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season, brought by horse-drawn carriage to offer Swedish cookies to merry-makers. The young and young at heart will wait with anticipation as Santa Claus arrives and the Great Tree on the Geneva Courthouse lawn is lit. Santa and Mrs. Claus will then open their gingerbread home for visits from excited children. Amongst the twinkling lights and fresh greenery-lined streets, chestnuts are roasting over open fires, carolers are filling the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene is taking place. Dazzling window displays…

Somehow my wife always pulls it off: Thanksgiving is hands-down the best meal of the year—great food with family, without the stress of gift-giving. It's all about being together to share a great meal. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable casseroles, pies, ice cream—the hot dishes all come out hot and tasting great. Everybody who shows up leaves with leftovers and all that turkey keeps me sleepy for a week. But before the miracle of the meal comes the shopping. And there are many choices, not only the big supermarket chains, but smaller grocers and specialty shops with their own strengths. Who sells the best meat? The freshest veggies? The best deals for dessert? Maybe you've got a Thanksgiving recipe with a hard-to-find …
