The McClouds were joined by about 50 others Monday night. They don't want to see Sandy Hook disappear from the headlines.
A group of Batavians packed a downtown street corner Monday night to remember those lost in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting and to show support for change in gun control. The residents stood on the southwest corner of South Batavia Avenue (Route 31) and Wilson Street, according to a Patch reader report. Residents held candles and signs up with phrases like "Remember Newtown" so motorists passing through downtown could see them. The vigil was scheduled to last one hour, starting at 7 p.m., according to an e-mail sent Jan. 10 by organizers Page and Carol McCloud. "This Monday will mark one month since the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut," the e-mail said. "As time passes, it is important that discussion continues and focus be …
While visiting Fox Valley, senator says gun control is only part of the solution to mass violence.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said on Friday that he would rather see Congress arrive at a “sensible solution” on curbing gun violence than see the president issue some kind of executive order attempting to remedy the problem. Still, in light of the power wielded by the NRA and the gun industry, which many congressmen will not stand up to, Durbin said he would support President Barack Obama if he does issue executive orders in an attempt to rein in gun violence. “Whatever it takes to keep our streets and schools safe, I’ll support,” he said. “But I hope that we could do it in the the normal congressional process,” he added. “I know that it’s tough. I know the politics on this issue very, very well, and I know some of my colleagues are not prepared…

St. Mark's received donations to help some former members dealing with the loss of their granddaughter, Charlotte Bacon. She was one of the first-graders who died in the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting.
St. Mark's Church in Geneva gathered donations to help some former members who lost a granddaughter in Friday's tragic shooting in Connecticut. Dan and Lindie Bacon are former St. Mark's missionaries and Batavia residents. They moved to Newtown, Conn., this year to help raise their grandchildren. One of those grandchildren, six-year-old Charlotte Bacon, was one of the 20 students who died in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. On Sunday the church received donations to purchase an airplane ticket for one of the family's sons living in Australia, and also for Charlotte's funeral, the Aurora Beacon-News reports. Dan and Lindie had moved to Newtown to be with their son, Joel, his wife, Joanne, and their children, …
Patch likes to hear from you on questions that get families talking and certainly, nothing is weighing more heavily on our minds this week than last week's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Here's how your neighbors discussed it with their kids.
Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. We're starting off with a question we posed recently on the Patch Facebook pages. Last week's tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT left the entire country shocked and speechless. Nevertheless, many parents felt they needed to discuss what happened with their children. That brings us to this week's question: Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Michele M Kilcoyne: We (are) talking to our son, but letting him ask us questions that he had concerns about. This way we did not say more then he needed or wanted to know. We were very honest and promised (…
