Aurora Democrat Stephanie Kifowit's Montgomery Road office was the site of a protest and counter-protest on Saturday, although the representative did not make an appearance.
Over a hundred opponents of same-sex marriage gathered Saturday morning outside state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit’s Aurora office, where they also faced off with gay rights activists staging a counter protest. The Defend Marriage rally was organized by the Illinois Family Institute, a conservative non-profit that opposes Senate Bill 10—the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act—which was passed by the Illinois Senate in February and is awaiting a vote by the House. A counter-protest was organized by local pro-LGBTQ group Fox Valley Pride with assistance from Illinois Unites and the Gay Liberation Network, said Jim Lausier, who was the primary organizer for this protest. Lausier said he wishes there was a larger group presence at the rally…

A peaceful demonstration Monday at Congressman Randy Hultgren's office in Geneva centers on keeping Social Security and Medicare from falling off a fiscal cliff that could happen in 22 days.
With 22 days remaining before $600 billion automatic tax increases and spending cuts kick in, demonstrators flocked Monday morning to U.S. Congressman Randy Hultgren's office in Geneva to tell Hultgren to keep Medicare and Social Security off the table. "I'm just totally irritated that somehow the fiscal bump in the road has become a fiscal cliff," said Jean Pierce of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. "And I'd like Hultgren to understand that there are a lot of seniors in his district who vote." Demonstrators discussed a range of issues, from wind energy to the state of the economy to election promises, but the primary issue centered on protecting Medicare and Social Security in the context of lawmakers' solutions to the …

The first protest held by Occupy Naperville on Saturday has a better than expected turnout. Participants also received a positive response from many drivers passing by, with only a few shouting out obscenities.
Holding her makeshift sign made from a manila envelope and marker, Stella Weatherly of Aurora was one of about 30 people participating in the Occupy Naperville protest Saturday morning. Weatherly’s sign, she admitted, was done very last minute. Weatherly had been following the Occupy Chicago protests, even spending time at the protests in the city. She decided to participate in the Naperville event. “I’m tired of corporation taking all of our money, basically,” she said. “It’s about time people woke up and realized what is happening in this country.” Occupy Naperville announced Thursday night it would be gathering Saturday at the corner of Washington Street and Ogden Avenue, marching south along Washington Street and making its way to a …

Geneva-based grassroots group holds rally to promote tax on Wall Street trading to fund nationwide jobs program.
Nearly 15 million Americans are unemployed, and Northern Illinois Jobs for Justice wants U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren to do something about it. Members of the Geneva protest group held a rally Friday afternoon in front of Hultgren’s office, which sits in an office park behind Yurs Funeral Home on west Route 38. Though the two dozen or so participants looked more like friends at a neighborhood cookout than an angry mob, they definitely had some hard questions for the 14th House District representative. “We are here once again to challenge Randy Hultgren on his refusal to help create jobs,” declared NIJJ spokesman Mary Shesgreen. “He keeps finding new excuses not to sign onto it.” The group particularly wants Hultgren to support House Bill 870, …

Matilda, I know that anyone who subscribes to the idea of "Tax the wealthy to fix the deficit" is not only hateful, but stupid. Please explain in detail what "wage equality" is, feel free to use the terms "theft" and "redistribution" freely. BTW, don't know if you've heard yet, Caterpillar in Aurora and Belvidere are cutting all wage workers to 27 hour weeks to avoid Nobamacare. The free ride …   more ›
