Kane County Will Allow Cameras in Courtrooms

Chief Judge Robert Spence says Kane will join Illinois Supreme Court's pilot program.

Chief Judge Robert B. Spence announced Thursday that the 16th Judicial Circuit will apply to join the Illinois Supreme Court’s pilot program to allow cameras in the courtroom. The decision is based on the recommendation of the 16th Judicial Circuit Courtroom Media Committee.  “I appreciate the Media Committee’s work on this, and based on its recommendation, the 16th Circuit will apply to join the pilot program,” Spence said. “The committee will continue in its work on this, as we will need some rather detailed rules concerning the plan’s logistics. We want to be thoughtful about it and try to anticipate issues that might arise. The application will be submitted after the local rules are written.” The move was applauded by Judge Timothy …

19-Year-Old Batavia Woman Charged With Knife Assault in Geneva

The following information was supplied by the Geneva Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

An incident disturbingly similar to the alleged stabbing murder in Batavia took place April 26 in Geneva, when a Batavia woman drew a knife on a victim and subsequently was charged with aggravated assault. Geneva police arrested Brittany Maberry, 19, of Batavia, on charges of aggravated assault following an incident at about 3:40 a.m. April 26 in the 200 block of Anderson Boulevard, Geneva police reports said. Police said Maberry used a deadly weapon in that she knowingly brandished a black Smith & Wesson folding knife with a 3-inch blade at the victim and placed the victim “in reasonable apprehension of battery.” Mayberry also was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor, which carries a $250 fine if paid by the due date. On Monday in …

Scott, If I were to guess, the city probably took some bad advice to keep a little too quiet about certain reoccurring events in the city. Unfortunately, the resulting mass ignorance probably skewed city priorities from what would have been obvious to sane people. The Streetscape project will help increase property values (which are very important) and the long overdue rental governance is going …   more ›

UPDATE: DuPage State's Attorney Won't Pursue Charges in Police Shooting at Fermilab

An internal investigation will still be conducted by West Chicago PD in the Feb. 18 incident. Here is a full account of what led to the shooting.

The DuPage County State's Attorney will not pursue criminal charges against a police officer involved in a Feb. 18 off-duty shooting on the Fermilab campus, officials announced Friday afternoon. "Based on the results of an incredibly thorough investigation, it is my conclusion that the People would not be able to meet their burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer involved in this incident committed a crime," said Robert Berlin, DuPage State's Attorney, in a release. "As a result, my office will not be taking any action against the officer." Berlin details the events which led up to a vehicle pursuit and shooting in a 1,000-word press release, parts of which are included further down in this story. The West Chicago Police…

This is a strange one. Fermilab is under federal jurisdiction and the security there would have been very quick to respond. Why not wait for the backup?   more ›

Diomedes Bench Trial Moved to May 24

An unavailable witness postpones the trial of the former Geneva High School student charged with making a death threat to a high school dean of students.

A judge has agreed to delay the trial of a former Geneva High School student charged with threatening a school dean last year. Daniel Diomedes was scheduled for an April 19 bench trial in the case that stemmed from an e-mail to an acquaintance where Diomedes referenced killing a specific dean. Prosecutors recently asked to have the trial pushed back because a witness was unavailable to testify on the original date. Over an objection from Diomedes' attorney, the judge allowed the case to be reset for trial on May 24.

Very sad, nice young man who has been calling out for help for years. It is sad that our society does not do more to address REAL ISSUES before it is too late and these kids fall through the cracks. Paul Ryan's budget does not cut a nickel from defense, WHY? We need to address mental health issues and instead we make cuts from those very institutions. I don't get it.   more ›
