Patch readers mourn the death of a man with struggles. He also leaves behind a daughter.
The death of a 43-year-old Geneva man whose body was found over the weekend is being considered a suicide, officials said. The Kane County Coroner's Office will conduct a toxicology report on the body of Casey Gemeny, the Kane County Chronicle reports. County Coroner Rob Russell told the Chronicle that he didn't know whether a full autopsy would be completed. Gemeny's body was discovered in a tree Saturday in the northeast part of the Kane County Events Center property, said Laurie Metanchuk, Community Affairs director for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. The Kane County Forest Preserve police and the Kane County Sheriff's Office investigated Gemeny's death. Gemeny had a troubled past that included a dangerous, high-speed chase…

Kane County Coroner-elect Rob Russell followed through on his first campaign promise—even before officially taking office. On Nov. 23, Russell retired as a sergeant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office to devote his full time and attention to his upcoming role as the next Kane County Coroner. When asked about his 20-year career with the Sheriff’s Office, Russell replied, “I have enjoyed my time there, and I will miss everyone. I have had the privilege of working for one of the most highly accredited law enforcement offices in the county. Doing so has prepared me well for my new role as coroner.” Russell plans to begin the accreditation process, which he says will help to professionalize the coroner’s office and restore credibility. “The…

"I’m very happy, very humbled for this opportunity," Russell told Patch. "I look forward to serving the citizens of Kane County for the next four years." Martinez said the campaign, his first time running for public office, was a challenging one. He congratulated all of tonight's winners on both sides of the political spectrum. In probably the most interesting and contentious Kane County race, Democrat Tao Martinez makes a late run at Republican Robert Russell—with an endorsement from a conservative group.
In a slate of Kane County Board races, it turns out that the coroner's race is, ironically, the most lively. The Kane County Conservative Coalition—the same group that has pushed hard for Chris Lauzen's campaign for County Board chairman—is backing Democrat Tao Martinez in the coroner's race over Republican Robert Russell. A press release issued Thursday by Jon Zahm said the KCCC is endorsing a Democrat for the first time since 2002, when the group favored Pat Perez for sheriff. In the same e-mail, Zahm does disclose that his wife works as a paid political consultant for Martinez. "Most of our endorsements are of people we have been supporting for months, even years in some cases," Zahm said in the press release. "However, in one of the 20…

A North Carolina man had cocaine, heroin and alcohol in his system when he died at the Kane County Fairgrounds in August, according to toxicology test results.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office ruled that a North Carolina man who died this summer while working for a circus at the Kane County Fairgrounds died as a result of multiple drug use. The official cause of death was listed as polypharmacy/accidental, and reflects that the death of Casey Dale Walker, 22, of Etowah, N.C., was an accidental death induced by the use of multiple drugs. The St. Charles Police Department, in a release, said that a toxicology report from the Illinois Crime Laboratory showed high traces of cocaine, heroin and alcohol in Walker’s system. The finding puts an end to speculation by PETA, an animal rights activist group, that Walker had been attacked and killed by an elephant performing with Piccadilly Circus. St. …
