Thunderstorm Alert UPDATE: Winds Already Take Down Trees in Geneva, Batavia

The National Weather Service-Chicago says there's a good chance for thunder-to-ground lightning and heavy rainfall in addition to wind gusts.

9:45 a.m. UPDATE — Tree down on East Wilson in Batavia, Tri-Com reports 9:25 a.m. UPDATE — A brittle tree cracks near the base and falls across Elm Avenue in Geneva, blocking the road and taking out a neighbor's mailbox. Fortunately, no one is hurt. 9 a.m. post: If April showers bring May flowers, we should be getting plenty of flowers soon. The National Weather Service-Chicago has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for our neck of the woods, starting this morning (Monday, April 8, 2013) with more showers expected through Wednesday. The NWS-C says there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Tri-Cities Gas Guide: $3.85 About as Good as it Gets This Week

Our weekly guide to help you find the lowest prices per gallon in the Tri-Cities of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

National average gasoline prices declined 4 cents per gallon of regular gasoline this week, and are down 10.6 cents a gallon from a month ago. In Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles, they're about the same as last week. AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report showed that nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline on late Wednesday was $3.640 a gallon, up slightly from $3.637 a day earlier, but down from $3.650 a week ago. The national average of a gallon of regular gas a month ago was $3.746, but was $3.923 a year ago. The highest recorded average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $4.114 on July 17, 2008. 'Smash and Grab' Serial Burglar Strikes Again

Four burglaries in Aurora look very similar—and happened in the same time period—as Friday's Citgo burglary in Geneva.

Batavia residents and businesses should be aware of a string of gas-station burglaries that have taken place in Aurora of late and look similar to the Friday burglary just north of Batavia at the Geneva Citgo near the train depot. The Daily Herald reports Tuesday that the "smash and grab" burglar has struck four more times in Aurora during the period of March 8 through March 17—three times at a gas station and once at a liquor store. All were in the early hours of the morning, ranging from 1:15 a.m. to 2:10 a.m. The DH says the total loss of the four Aurora burglaries, including items or cash stolen and property damage, is more than $26,500. The incident are of interest to Batavia because the burglar obviously roves—the latest in Aurora …

We've been wondering for a long time whether Jenny McCarthy was putting down roots in our area, and proof positive came March 8 on the Rachael Ray Show. Jenny talked about The Jenny McCarthy Show on VH1 and wardrobe malfunctions she's had at the Vanity Fair party after the Oscars and in her first appearance in a WWE event, but then the talk turned to her move to back to the Chicago area, and her son, Evan. Rachael asked about shopping and food in Chicago, and that's when "Geneva news" popped out like happy wardrobe malfunction. "I live in Geneva, which is like a little historical district," she said. "So there’s no big stores. All the stores are inside of houses—little old houses, so I buy everything from there. It’s great." It is, indeed…

UPDATE: Soldering Work Sparks Fire at The Holmstad Retirement Center

And quick work by Batavia, Geneva and North Aurora firefighters saves the day.

Emergency units from Geneva, Batavia and North Aurora quickly put out a fire that was reported at around 12:36 p.m. Thursday at the Holdstad retirement community, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway. Fire crews from multiple departments—Batavia, Geneva and North Aurora—arrived at the scene after a report of smoke in Building A, and the dispatch was upgraded to a general alarm. Firefighters inside discovered a small fire had started in wall of a bathroom on first floor, according to a press release from the Batavia Fire Department. "The fire appears to have started while maintenance personnel were soldering broken water pipe in the wall, igniting building materials," the press release said.
