After 100 years, the rivalry is stronger than ever. Batavia wowed their home crowd tonight with a 35-21 victory over Geneva to start Upstate Eight River Division conference play. “It felt great to stay on top of the rivalry,” Batavia Coach Dennis Piron told Patch after the game. "Geneva always plays hard, they're also well-coached." Batavia had five touchdowns, two kicks and a successful two-point conversion. Junior running backs Anthony Thielk and Anthony Scaccia each had two touchdowns, in that order. Senior wide receiver Zach Strittmatter caught for a touchdown and completed the two-point conversion after Thielk touchdown #2 in the first-half of the game. One of the oldest rivalries in Illinois football history resumes Friday, as Geneva travels to Batavia for the 93rd meeting of the two neighbor schools. Which team will win this year?
In this, the 100th anniversary of the Geneva-Batavia football rivalry, all the coins are stacked on the Bulldogs' side. Batavia is 2-0 so far in 2012 and coming off a 2011 season in which the Bulldogs went 12-1 and advanced to the state Class 6A semifinals. Geneva is 0-2 this season, handed a couple of hefty losses in a rebuilding year after bowing out in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs a year ago. The Bulldogs won the first meeting, a 12-7 victory at Batavia in 1913. Overall, the Vikings have won 51 times to the Bulldogs' 37. There have been five ties, and the teams did not play for seven of the intervening years, according to the outstanding Batavia library website.
