Bishop Will Celebrate Life of The Rev. Monsignor Robert B. Hoffman March 27 at St. John Neumann

The former St. John Neumann pastor was named a Prelate of Honor by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on June 24, 1998, and was a former director of Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Rockford and dean of the Elgin Deanery.

Rockford Diocese Bishop David J. Malloy will be the main celebrant at the March 27 funeral Mass of former St. John Neumann pastor, the Rev. Monsignor Robert B. Hoffman, who will be remembered for his long and distinguished service in the Rockford Diocese and at parishes throughout the area. The Rev. Hoffman died Saturday, March 23, 2013, in his home after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born May 29, 1935, in Aurora, to John and Sarah (McLaughlin) Hoffman. He attended high school at Marmion Military Academy, Aurora, Loyola University, Chicago, and Loras College, Dubuque, IA, and attended seminary at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained July 1, 1962, and was named a Prelate of Honor by His Holiness Pope …

'Untouchables' and 'Damien Omen II' Actor Paul Cook of Geneva Dies at 84

The multi-talented actor, author and composer—whose credits include "Damien-Omen II, "The Untouchables" and Dr. Hull in "Somewhere In Time"—was also an accomplished writer and compose and former president of the TV Actors Studio in Chicago.

Who knew that so famous an actor was also a resident of Geneva? Paul M. Cook, a well-known actor, author, composer and resident of Geneva, died Saturday March 16, 2013, at Pine Acres Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb after a long battle with Parkinson Disease. He was 84. He was born May 20, 1928, in San Antonio, TX, the son of Henry Barnard and Letha (Frame) Cook. As an actor in TV commercials, industrial films and movies for 45 years, he was with the Shirley Hamilton Agency in Chicago. His movie credits include Damien-Omen II, The Untouchables and he played Dr. Hull in Somewhere In Time. Cook served many years as a Dale Carnegie instructor, was a regional vice president of Screen Actors Guild in Detroit and president of TV Actors Studio in …

Family, Friends Recall Fairbanks as Kind, Caring

Scores turn out for funeral service for St. Charles East grad, Elgin Community College student Michael D. Fairbanks.

Nearly 200 people turned out Saturday afternoon to share fond memories of and bid a tearful farewell to Michael D. Fairbanks, a young man who by all accounts leaves a legacy of kindness, compassion, humor, acceptance of others, and fearless leadership. Fairbanks, 19, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 26, at a home in Elburn. The large visitation room where the St. Charles East High School graduate’s casket awaited visitors was packed to overflowing for the 2 p.m. service that included scripture readings and prayer, but also a time for his family and friends to step up and, sometimes with tears, other times amid laughter, to share poignant memories of a young man who had deeply touched the lives of those around him. “We’ve lost such…

Geneva City Council Remembers Alderman Ralph Dantino

Visitation is 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, and funeral Mass is Friday for the Geneva alderman who died Monday at the age of 56. Also remembered Tuesday at City Hall is beloved Geneva music teacher Adella Granquist, who died Feb. 15 in California.

After a moment of silence for Ralph Dantino, Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer summed up a community's feelings about his fellow alderman, who died Monday after a four-year battle with cancer. "If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever," Singer said. Dantino was remembered Tuesday night at City Hall, where he had held a 5th Ward seat for the better part of the past four years. "Ralph was a great husband, a great father and a great friend, and he will certainly be missed," said Dean Kilburg, a 3rd Ward alderman and close friend.
