As snow silently fell, the 20-year-old soldier arrived at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia after a procession. Here are some images from outside West Aurora High School and the church.
This weekend Chris Patterson is among those who know him best. Spc. Patterson arrived at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia Friday morning after a procession that took him from Moss Family Funeral Home on the west side to West Aurora High School. Patterson passed by thousands at the high school and perhaps several dozens more as his procession headed to the church. He was accompanied by police, fire crews, members of the Patriot Guard Riders and his family. Patterson, a Indiana National Guardsman, died on Jan. 6 with three other soldiers in Afghanistan after a roadside bomb went off underneath their vehicle. He was 20 years old. Droves of people braved the snow to come pay their respects to Patterson during a seven-hour visitation. A …

Put Steve Jobs in the same category as Walt Disney. They were magic-makers of the first order.
When the world found out in February 1999 that Walter Payton needed a liver transplant, I was not particularly moved. It just didn’t pertain much to my life. Then, a few weeks later, film critic Gene Siskel died. “I am so very, very sad,” I told my husband when he delivered the news. “That’s the way other people feel about Walter Payton,” he said, mildly, but with import that has stuck all these years. That sadness I felt when Siskel died doesn’t BEGIN to cover how I felt when my middle daughter, the child who loves all things Apple, who convinced me that giving her dad an iPad for Christmas would be a fabulous, if extravagant gift, who couldn’t wait to order the MacBook she received for her high school graduation, called Wednesday …

Announcement comes through e-mail to board members.
It was a shock Monday when someone sent along an e-mail saying that Jean Weems had died. I have no details, but we'll share any information as becomes available. If you'd ever visited County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, you met with Jean. She was clearly so competent, so throughly kind and in-the-know, that the office of the County Board chairman and the Kane County Board as a whole was enhanced by her presence. The e-mail described her as "the glue that held together the County Board Office." "It is our sad duty to inform you that Jean Weems, executive assistant to County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, has passed away," the e-mail said. "Jean had been a Kane County employee for over 17 years. Her hard work, dedication and …

Friends, family refer to Naperville 59-year-old as an "Angel."
Randy Suchy died a hero, drowning near the Geneva dam Aug. 5 while trying to save a 12-year-old boy. Marie Wilson of the Daily Herald wrote two beautiful pieces about him. The first, headlined "Naperville man ‘didn't hesitate' to save Bolingbrook boy on Fox River" says Suchy actually saved the 12-year-old by pushing him away from the dam and out of the undertow, according to Suchy's brother, Bill. The second story, headlined "Naperville rescuer remembers as friend, 'Angel,' " provides coverage of the Thursday memorial service in Willowbrook. The Naperville Sun also report provides insights into Suchy's life in a story by Sandy Illian Bosch with the headline "Friends remember Napeville man who died a hero." Initial reports had Suchy's …

My deepest sympathies go out to Mr. and Mrs. Patterson and their family for the loss of Chris. I had the honor of helping with the PGR as an escort of Spc. Patterson and his family on Friday.
