State's Minimum Wage Could Become Highest in Country

Here is a wrap-up of some of the latest political news.

A bill that would give Illinois the highest minimum rate in the country is being studied by the Illinois Senate. Illinois’ current minimum wage is $8.25 an hour, making the state one of 18 states with a minimum wage higher than the national level of $7.25 an hour. The measure would increase the wage by 50 cents a year until it matches the inflation-adjusted equivalent of minimum wage in 1968, which was $1.60 per hour. The phased-in hikes would bring Illinois’ minimum wage to $10.55 in 2015, after which yearly cost-of-living increases would occur, according to Illinois Statehouse News. Washington state has the highest minimum wage of $9.04. The proposal, which was sent May 16 to the full Senate on a 9-5 vote of the Senate Executive …

Photo Gallery: Happy Birthday, Geneva City Hall!

Geneva celebrates the 100th anniversary of City Hall with a time-capsule opening, re-dedication and community photo. The celebration and tours went until noon May 19—with Gardenology throughout town the rest of the day.

If you're having a birthday party, you have to have a photo of the birthday girl or boy, with relatives gathered around, bearing gifts and well-wishes. And that's no different for Geneva's City Hall, which turns 100 today. Far more than 100 guests and well-wishers gathered to have their photos taken for posterity and for admission into the time capsule that will be buried at City Hall and opened again in another 100 years. City Hall also was re-dedicated, with a plaque honoring Chuck Lencioni, the longtime building commissioner, volunteer firefighter and community servant. In his opening remarks, Mayor Kevin Burns called City Hall the community's "front porch," a piece of Americana that never goes out of style, in some ways looking very …

Rick, I appreciate you questioning the inclusion of my work into this - I was also surprised to see that mentioned here. What I do to support my family has absolutely nothing to do with this matter, and my concern over my child's education has nothing to do with my work. The original story did not mention my work at all.   more ›

Jeff Ward: DuPage County Needs to Do Some Political House Cleaning

Ah! But my esteemed Kane Countians get to take the week off!

My fine Kane County compatriots! You’ve done well. Political perfection may be a pipe dream, but I have to say that things are looking a little better out here because of your recent voting proclivities. The sheriff who thought he was king is long gone and Pat Perez has done a phenomenal job in his place. In fact, he’s done so well that I’ve been encouraging him to consider a third term. You might want to do the same thing. Once stripped of her County Board cronies, Chairman Karen McConnaughay fled for Springfield faster than a Rush Limbaugh advertiser jumped ship. She’ll do far less damage down there and fit in perfectly with that group of ineffectual state senators. You saw right through Cathy Hurlbutt’s court clerk makeover attempt, you…

I just happened upon your piece when it triggered my email alert on Joe Birkett's name. You're right on about DuPage County, but I'd like to add that that the fear factor plays a large role in the state's attorney and sheriff's elections. The vindictive and malicious nature of John Zaruba and Joe Birkett, and their willingness to abuse their power has kept candidates from opposing them in …   more ›
