Mia's 15th Birthday Brings a Special Present to Marklund

Mia Garbaccio wanted no gifts for her birthday; instead she gave a $100 donation to Marklund

A unique surprise 15th birthday party was held Friday, April 15, at , 1S450 Wyatt Dr., Geneva.

Mia Garbaccio of Batavia, Mia’s sister Gabby, and Amy Cole of Geneva chose to celebrate Mia’s 15th birthday with Marklund residents. In honor of the milestone, Mia wanted no gifts; instead she gave a $100 donation to Marklund.

The girls have been volunteering at Marklund since July 2010. Together they have logged 191 hours. To say they are devoted is an understatement.

“At a time of life when a lot of teens might choose to focus on themselves, Mia, Gabby and Amy gave to others,” said Cathy Nikrandt, volunteer manager at Marklund. “We are so lucky to have them share their time and energy with us. They are very special girls.”

“This was the best birthday I’ve ever had,” Mia said. “Marklund needs money more than I need gifts. The residents are my friends, and I want them to have equipment and food and all the things they need.”
