Heads Up: Work on I-90 Will Reduce Lanes at Randall Road, Starting Tuesday
Temporary lane reduction scheduled for five weeks for eastbound traffic between Randall Road and Elgin Toll Plaza.
An eastbound traffic shift on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) is scheduled this week in the Elgin area as part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project. The shift will include a five-week reduction in the number of lanes between Randall Road and the Elgin Toll Plaza, and delays are expected.
On Tuesday night, Sept. 24, eastbound I-90 traffic will be shifted in the four-mile segment between the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge and the Elgin Toll Plaza. The two lanes of traffic between the Union Pacific Railroad and Randall Road will be shifted onto the eastbound lanes with an available full right shoulder. Traffic between Randall Road and the Elgin Plaza will be shifted onto the right lane and right shoulder.
The shift will remove the current split traffic configuration between Randall Road and the Elgin Toll Plaza. However, a temporary reduction of three lanes to two is needed to provide room to construct new center lane pavement in this segment.
Work to shift traffic is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane overnight however, the lane reduction and traffic shift will be completed by 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in advance of the morning rush hour. During this stage of construction, traffic entering eastbound I-90 from Randall Road will need to yield on the ramp and merge with mainline traffic.
This configuration is expected to be in place for approximately five weeks, until the third lane on I-90 beginning at Randall Road can be restored. Delays on I-90 and Randall Road are expected.
Work to rebuild and widen the eastbound lanes between Rockford and Elgin began this spring and will be completed by the end of the year, with the westbound lanes scheduled to be rebuilt and widened in 2014. Work to rebuild and widen the eastern section of I-90 is scheduled for 2014-2016.
When complete, I-90 will be a 21st century, state-of-the-art corridor linking Rockford to O'Hare Airport. The improved roadway will accommodate as many as 30,000 more vehicles per day and will save drivers $440 million annually due to reduced congestion and delays. The I‐90 corridor from Chicago to Rockford serves nearly 1 million travelers per day.
