Tri-Cities Summer Camp Guide: Local Camps Promise Kids Active Fun in the Sun

Enrollment is starting soon for many summer camps. Here's a selection of summer camps in and around the Tri-Cities.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in Kane County in 2013, boredom won't be an option for Tri-Cities children.

Organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department, offer dozens of camp choices focused around science, reading, sports, music and more. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a more focused camp, this list features a few in your town and nearby.

Geneva

Geneva Park District

What: Registration begins March 12 for Geneva Park District residents and March 19 for non-residents. According to the website, "Geneva Park District Camps focus on providing opportunities to all participants to grow personally by developing a positive self image and learning to treat themselves and others with respect. The camps teach participants to appreciate diversity, become better leaders and develop a variety of specific skills and assets through various outdoor experiences."

It's A Girl Thing

What: It’s A Girl Thing is keeping things creative this summer for girls (little brothers are welcome, too). From noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, campers can enjoy crafts, dance parties, snacks, and a whole lot of fun; all while mom gets to run errands or spend some time relaxing.

Geneva Fire Department

What: The department will be educating children this summer with its annual “Risk Watch,” a day-camp program teaching kids how to be safe and prevent injuries. Fun activities will be used to show kids how to stay safe, and keep cool, calm, and collected, during an emergency.

St. Charles

Kane County Forest Preserve

What: Detailed information about 2013 programs has not yet been released, but half-day, full-day and twilight camps have been hosted in recent years for children in first through fifth grade at Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve.

St. Charles Park District

What: The St. Charles Park District has summer camp programs for kids of all ages. Many different activity camps are available—from sports to nature—that will keep kids and teens engaged and active all summer long.

Landmark Farm

What: Whether your child is looking for a physically active option or loves being with animals, Landmark Farm's riding camps could be just the ticket. According to its website, "Whether you’re an accomplished rider looking to be challenged and attend the most prestigious shows in the country, or simply know you want to get involved but don’t have a lot of time, Landmark Farm Inc. is for you."

Goddard School

What: Campers will find something to interest them with a vast array of programs focusing on both education and fun. According to the school's website, "Science and nature, arts and crafts, manners, computers and technology, literature and language, music and movement, sports and games, cooking and drama are all brought to life. We ensure our children have a memorable summer all the while, preparing them for the upcoming school year."

Riverwoods Family Campus

What: On 85 acres along the Fox River, Riverwoods Family Campus' summer programs are divided into offerings for kids and teens. The residential summer camps for both age groups focus on developing relationship with friends and Christ while participating in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

Batavia

Batavia Park District

What: There are many different activity camps available-from sports to nature-that will keep kids of all ages engaged and active throughout the summer. From Cheerleading and Poms, to nature and adventure, there is something of interest for everyone.

Montessori Academy

What: Children ages 3 to 6 can participate in SummerQuest, "an exciting summer of learning and growth," while students in first through sixth grades can take part in the Myths and Legends camp, which promises "new friends (and great times" and activities include myth-busting, sports, science, field trips and swimming.

Kindercare

What: With locations in all three towns, Kindercare offers a 12-week summer camp program for ages 3 to 12. Whether your child is interested in science, cooking, art, or sports; there’s something for everybody to keep busy this summer.
