Last Game on Home Field Memorable for Batavia Seniors

BHS student Claire Jacobi recaps Batavia's 19-14 win over Lake Forest. Next up: The Bulldogs travel to Rockford Boylan.

A big win at Bulldog Stadium helped make saying goodbye to their home field a little bit easier for the seniors of the Batavia football team. As Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ blared from the speakers, the boys huddled up for their last talk on their home field. The coaches were almost speechless as they gathered to celebrate their 19-14 win against Lake Forest in the third round of playoffs.

The defense was extremely valuable in the Bulldog win. Josh Leonhard and Anthony Thielk were key players on the defensive side. Running back Anthony Scaccia lead the offense with 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Scaccia now holds the school record for most rushing yards and touchdowns in a season.

The two teams battled the entire game. A 90-yard interception by Andrew Nelson left the score 7-6 Lake forest at the end of the 1st quarter. During the 2nd quarter, Lake Forest intercepted the ball again, but it was then recovered by Batavia’s Jake Hlava in the following play, which later lead to a Scaccia touchdown to make the score 12-7 going into halftime.

A long Micah Coffey pass to Rourke Mullins in the third quarter opened up a 39-yard run for the quick receiver, which then gave the bulldogs a 12-point lead. But Lake Forest continued to fight, as Trent Williams scored with 3:52 to go.

Batavia’s defense took it from there. Stopping Lake Forest’s offense, and helping Batavia continue on to next week’s semi-final at Rockford Boylan.
