Want to Join the Batavia School Board? Deadline Friday to Apply

Batavia Public School District 101 is accepting applications to fill the vacancy resulting from the resignation of board member Kathy Roberts.

Batavia Public School District 101 is accepting applications to fill the vacancy resulting from the resignation of board member Kathy Roberts.

The individual selected will serve on the Board of Education from the date of appointment until the April 7, 2015, election.

The Board of Education will vote on the appointment of the new member at the June 25, 2013, Regular Board of Education meeting.

"From its seven-member Board of Education to its 650 employees, Batavia Public Schools is celebrated for its unwavering commitment to students and for its purposeful collaboration," the board says in the announcement of the vacancy.

"Through a continuous improvement perspective that is grounded on a genuine belief that all students can learn, the Board of Education works collaboratively with administrators and educators to maintain a learning environment that maximizes resources to improve the lives of students. Through its focus on learning, results and collaboration, the district prepares students today to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

"The district’s unwavering commitment to provide students with an excellent education is reflected in its mission of 'Always learning. Always Growing' and is the foundation for the powers and duties of the Board of Education."

Those duties include:

  • Clarifying the district’s purpose;
  • Connecting with the community;
  • Delegating authority; and
  • Monitoring performance.

Applicants should support the district’s mission and demonstrate familiarity with the board’s policies regarding general duties and responsibilities of a board and a board member, including fiduciary responsibilities, conflict of interest, ethics and gift ban. 

Applicants for the Board vacancy must also meet the following criteria:
  • Be a citizen of the United States;
  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Be a registered voter;
  • Be a resident of the State of Illinois; and 
  • Reside within BPS101 boundaries for at least one year preceding board appointment. 
Applicants should submit a letter of interest and a brief resume by 4 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, to Dr. Lisa Hichens, Board Secretary, via email at superintendent@bps101.net or hand-delivered to the Rosalie Jones Administration Center located at 335 W. Wilson Street in Batavia.
