More Than 70 in School District 101 Earn More Than $100,000

Second in a series: Six-figure incomes are not unusual for educators, with 18 administrators and 53 certified employees earning $100,000 or more base salary.

According to law, on or before Oct. 1 of each year, school districts in Illinois, including special charter districts, are required to post on their Internet websites an itemized salary compensation report for every certified employee in the district inclusive of administrators, teaching staff and the district superintendent.

Batavia School District 101's report is a little hard to find via navigation on bps101.net, but it is on the "Human Resources" page and a search for "compensation" takes you straight to the report, which reflects data drawn from the prior school year.

This is the second in a series of articles that looks at the data. The following are the administrators and certified employees who earn more than $100,000 base salary. The figures below do not include annuities, bonus, vacation payout, pension contribution, health care, dental, vacation or sick days — all of which are included in the compensation report.

As you can see, more than 70 employees earned $100,000 or more during the 2012-13 school year. Superintendent Jack Barshinger earned the highest salary, a base of $244,744 during his final year with the district.

The district is in the middle of a two-year contract with the Batavia Education Association, which expires June 30, 2014. You'll notice that many of the teachers' salaries are the same, because they have similar education and experience and therefore fall into the same "step and lane" salary category.

Typically, a teacher's salary goes up by a base percentage annually, but the teacher can earn more than that percentage due to "step" increases for length of employment and "lane" increases for post-graduate education achieved.

The present BEA contract contained salary increases of 2.35 percent in the first year and 2.8 percent in the second year for teachers in exchange for a 20 percent reduction in the funds committed toward health benefits — from 100 percent to 80 percent.

Obviously, administrator salaries are not subject to that contract.
