Batavia Schools Begin Math Pilot Programs to Deal With Common Core

Chief Academic Officer Dr. Brad Newkirk tells parents to expect "full redevelopment" of District 101's mathematics curriculum to align with new, state-mandated Common Core standards.

Batavia Public School District 101 is working toward the "full redevelopment" of its mathematics curriculum to align with new, state-mandated Common Core standards and will begin to implement those programs this year, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Brad Newkirk told parents this week.

"As we begin the 2013-2014 school year, we will continue modifying our instructional practices in mathematics and ELA (English Language Arts), but we will also begin piloting curricular units in mathematics," Newkirk said in an email.

"Based on your child’s grade, school, and teacher, your child may be involved in some of these curricular pilots," he said.

The pilots may be enrichment modules to enhance existing math instruction at the elementary level or units of mathematics instruction designed to replace existing curriculum that is not tightly aligned to the Common Core at the middle or high school levels.

A parallel group of teachers and administrators are also working on the ELA standards, but the piloting for ELA for 2013-14 will focus on changes in instructional strategies connected to school-improvement plans, Newkirk said.
