Batavia School Board Member Jayne Resek Resigns, District Seeks Replacement

Resek steps down Tuesday after 11 years on the School Board. The district has 45 days to find a replacement.

is in search of a new School Board member after one of its veterans resigned this week.

Jayne Resek announced her resignation at the Batavia School Board meeting on Tuesday night. She turned in her formal notice Wednesday morning, Batavia Superintendent Jack Barshinger said.

Resek resigned in part for family reasons—she is taking care of her elderly mother. She has served on the Board for 11 years.

Resek plans to stay on the Board until the district finds a replacement. To that end, the district announced a search on Wednesday to fill the vacancy left by Resek.

The person selected to take Resek's place will serve until the April 9, 2013 election. Resek's seat and three other incumbent seats will be up for reelection next year. Resek's replacement can run for one of the seats.

The Board has 45 days from the date of resignation to fill the position. A reference during Tuesday's meeting about a 30-day period was inaccurate, district officials said Wednesday.

How to Apply

Applicants for the Board seat vacancy must be: 

  • A citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A resident of Illinois and the Batavia Public Schools District for at least one year preceding board appointment
  • A registered voter

Letters of Interest and resumes must be turned in by noon, Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

Applicants should show familiarity with the Board’s policies regarding general duties and responsibilities of a Board and a Board member, including fiduciary responsibilities, conflict of interest, ethics and gift ban. The School Board policies are available here.

The School Board will likely review all Letters of Interest on or before their next regular meeting, which is scheduled for July 24, 2012.
