Batavia Principal: Remind Students They're Safe At School

"We cannot live in fear of the dangers that will always be there as 'what ifs,' but rather, live in the ready," the principal said.

The following is a message from Grace McWayne School Principal Jeff Modaff:

When President Barack Obama addressed the nation last night, he pointed out that as parents, we eventually come to the realization that we cannot raise our children alone.  We at Grace McWayne are privileged to be the ones who love, cherish, teach and keep your children safe each day.

Please know that efforts have always been made each day in order to keep your children safe while they are with us at school.  Plans are in place and are reviewed regularly.  The tragedies we have endured at schools over the past years will never be forgotten.  Beyond the immediate time of mourning, we as educators take much time to reflect on our own practices and look to find ways to protect our children even more.

With that said, we cannot live in fear of the dangers that will always be there as "what ifs", but rather, live in the ready.  We will continue to live in the ready by reviewing procedures and preparations in the case that an emergency arises.  If anything, the attention drawn to school safety as a result of this recent tragedy will only lead to your children being even safer in any of our nation's schools.

Please help the Grace McWayne staff remind our students that they are safe at school.  If they need someone to talk to about this, they are welcome to share their fears and concerns with any of our staff members.  Let's work together to support our students and families through this difficult time.
