Superintendent Barshinger's 2012-13 Total Compensation: $343,348

First of a series on School District 101 compensation.

Batavia School Superintendent Dr. Jack Bashinger's last year included many accolades for his 38 years of service to schools and seven to District 101, but it wasn't all fun and farewells. During the year, he handled some difficult decision-making, helped new School Superintendent Lisa Hichens make the transition from her role as Batavia High School principal and dealt with a little controversy, including the media spotlight on a hefty bill for a leadership conference meal for School Board members and flak over the discipline of a teacher.

Barshinger's 2012-13 compensation for that final year was the highest of his career, as his package topped $343,000, according to the district's annual salary compensation report.

According to law, on or before Oct. 1 of each year, school districts in Illinois including special charter districts, shall post on its Internet website, if any, an itemized salary compensation report for every certified employee in the district inclusive of administrators, teaching staff, and the district superintendent. The report is to reflect data drawn from the prior school year.

Barshinger's total compensation included $244,744 base salary, plus the following:

  • $25,000 in annuities
  • $7,300 bonus
  • $5,647.98 vacation payout
  • $39,541.62 retirement pension
  • $5,940.00 travel, phone, professional development
  • $11,914.00 health
  • $1,156.00 dental
  • $2,105.20 physical flex vision, life
Barshinger's base salary compares to $227,064.08 for Geneva School District 304 Superintendent Kent Mutchler in the 2012-13 school year.
