Remember to Set Your Clocks Back Tonight

Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, in Batavia, IL and the rest of the U.S. It's a good time to check batteries in your smoke detectors, too.

Hey, Batavia! It's nearing the time to set the clocks back an hour, gain an hour's sleep and be prepared to live in darkness for a good chunk of the day.

Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013.

You will be setting your clock back one hour, following the adage of “spring forward, fall back.”

How daylight savings got its start

In an effort to save resources during World War II, the U.S. made daylight savings time mandatory for the whole country. And it was observed the entire year. Now it's optional for states, so, for example, if you travel from California to Arizona in the winter, you'll lose an hour.

Some studies have shown that extending daylight saving time results in a reduction in energy consumption; other studies suggest just the opposite.

Good Time to Check Batteries for Smoke Detectors

As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, the Kane County Health Department and Kane County Office of Emergency Management encourage residents to make sure their families are prepared for a possible emergency. A few simple steps, such as checking the batteries in smoke alarms, developing a family communications plan and putting an emergency kit together can go a long way toward keeping families safe.

Information on preparing for emergencies can be found  at www.Kanehealth.com or www.Ready.gov.
