Kane County Coroner Chuck West Dies After Transplant Complications

West passed away shortly after midnight on July 4. He was 69.

Kane County Coroner Chuck West has died, his family said through a prepared statement on Wednesday given to Yurs Funeral Homes.

West, 69, passed away shortly after midnight on July 4 following complications from a liver transplant, said the statement.

Visitation for West will be this Sunday, July 8, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. Charles Yurs Funeral Home location, 405 E. Main St. (corner of Rt. 64 and Rt. 25) in St. Charles, said Jim Diorio, owner of the funeral home.

There will likely be a funeral service on Monday, July 9, or sometime thereafter. The family will continue to finalize the arrangements on Thursday.

His family “thanks his countless friends and supporters for their kindness and prayers this past year,” the statement said.

West suffered from nonalcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, the Daily Herald reports.

West battled his health issues, but they later prevented him from performing his coroner duties and attending hearings for a misconduct trial.

West’s June transplant appeared to be successful at first, but things took a turn for the worst recently, Attorney Gary Johnson told Patch on Wednesday.

West also  that claims he and deputies tried to "compel" a whistleblower to resign.

In late March 2011, Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay . Since then West had said that he did not plan to run for reelection.

A deputy coroner took over for West during his leave for surgery, the Kane County Chronicle reports. An interim coroner will be appointed in the near future.

West was in his third term as coroner, the Chronicle’s story said. He also served as a deputy coroner, paramedic and grief counselor, according to the Herald’s story.

West was an Elgin resident.
