Flu Risk High in Kane County

As of Jan. 4, about 6.09 percent of participating hospital emergency room visits in Kane County was for Influenza-Like-Illness. That's an increase of 324 percent since week mid-December.
Labs reported that 246 of 1003 (24.53 percent) specimens tested for influenza were positive. Of the 246 positive specimens tested, 231 (93.9 percent) were positive for influenza A, 13 (5.3 percent) were positive for influenza B and 2 were positive for A and B. No other specimen tested positive for week ending January 4, 2014.
The absenteeism rate for schools in Kane County was not recorded for this week as schools were closed for winter break.
No influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported.
What to Do
Obviously, see your doctor. Also, flu shots are offered by local pharmacies. Walgreens, CVS, Meijer, Jewel-Osco are among them.

- Take antiviral drugs if your doctor recommends them.
Walk-in Flu Vaccine Clinics
Department is offering walk-in flu clinics at its Aurora office, 1240 N. Highland Ave. Clinic hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, while supplies of flu vaccine last. The Health Department accepts many insurance cards. The cost of the vaccine without insurance is $15, payable by check or cash.
