The driver, 25-year-old Jareb Brown of McHenry, IL, snapped a utility pole, knocked down a stop sign, drove on a lawn and then left the scene at 4:13 p.m. Nov. 29, said.

Brown was headed westbound on Pine Street trying to turn northbound on Van Buren. As he turned right onto Van Buren, he took out the stop sign and the utility pole.

Crews were on the scene for several hours as they completed their repairs. A new utility pole had to be erected, and a new street light had to be attached to the pole.

Wires and yellow caution tape hung lifelessly onto the lawn of the house at Pine and Van Buren, right next to where the incident took place.

Police said many residents gathered outside after the incident occurred.

Include on this page is a gallery of 20 images taken in the evening while cleanup concluded. You will notice that the lighting changes dramatically for some of the pictures in this story. This is because a city crew had a light tower up during its installation of a new utility pole. As they finished, the light tower came down and affected the available light for these photos.

What the Police Report Said

After the was already published, a reporter obtained the full crash report. Here are some more details from that day:

After the truck driver fled the scene in his vehicle, a Batavia police officer stopped him on the 600 block of East Wilson Street.

The driver, Jareb Brown, stated that he followed traffic direction itinerary provided by his employer. When he got to Pine and Van Buren, "he had difficulty negotiating the turn and may have gotten caught up on the utility wires," according to the report.

Another officer responded to the crash site. The officer reported that the utility pole was snapped in half—witnesses indicated that Brown's truck should have damage on the passenger side.

The officer who stopped Brown saw large scuff marks that appeared to be new run down the entire passenger side of the trailer.

"There were pieces of wood consistent to a telephone pole embedded in the side of the trailer," the report said.

Four witnesses gave the same account to police of the driver: As Brown turned onto Van Buren, he left the roadway, ran over a stop sign and cut down the pole in half.

Brown was cited for improper lane usage and failure to report a crash with property damage. His court date is Dec. 13, according to the report.

One of the witnesses recorded a short video of the truck during the incident. To see some of this footage in our initial report, click .
