City Briefs, Part 2: Batavian Helps Children of Haiti

The council also learns about Green Star Inc., appoints a Streetscape contact and reappoints the Batavia Fire Chief to a pension board.

Local Relief Project for the Children of Haiti

Doris Frame, a mother of an earthquake survivor in Haiti, presented her Sewing Day Project to the Batavia City Council on Monday.

Frame organizes volunteers to sew dresses, pants and shorts out of pillowcases and t-shirts for children in Haiti. She recently hosted a sewing day in Chicago.

One church recently donated 1,000 t-shirts to her to create shorts and pants.

“There’s so much that still needs to be done in Haiti,” Frame said.

Frame will host a Sewing Day in Batavia at the Congregational Church of Batavia on May 21 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Right now, she needs people to donate pillow cases to her.

People can drop off pillowcases and trim for the cause either through mail or in person at 1148 North Ave., Batavia.

In the past, she has flown to Haiti to hand out the clothes to orphans in Jacmel, Haiti. Frame will deliver the clothes along with diapers to the children of Haiti in July.

Innovative Remodeling Business Brings Green Solutions to Batavia

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke on Monday night welcomed Green Star Inc. owner Brian Hunter, who was featured as part of the Batavia MainStreet Minute. Hunter owns a remodeling company that offers green solutions for homes.

Green Star has dedicated 15 years to using environmentally friendly products. The company also recycles everything they take off the exterior part of houses, including roofing, siding and doors, Hunter said. They also use recycled products to put on roofing and siding, he said.

 “We’d like to be part of the community,” Hunter said.

Streetscape Appointment

The City Council on Monday night appointed Alderman Mike O’Brien as the chairman of the Streetscape Committee. O’Brien will be the council’s eyes and ears when it comes to Streetscape discussions and updates.

Deicke Reappointed Trustee to Fire Pension Board

The city council approved Mayor Jeff Schielke reappointing Randy Deicke as a Trustee to the Batavia Fire Pension Board for another term of three years. Deicke replaced William Darin on Jan. 20, 2009, finishing Darin’s term after he retired.
