Do You Want an Online Charter School in Batavia? Public Hearing Set for 6PM Tuesday

Batavia School District 101 will discuss an application for a controversial online charter school proposal during a meeting at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19, 2013) at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center.

Batavia public schools, along with 17 other school districts, recently received a proposal from an Illinois not-for-profit corporation called Virtual Learning Solutions, Inc., to establish an online, virtual charter school serving grades K-12.

Virtual Learning Solutions is seeking to create the Illinois Virtual Charter School at Fox River Valley, which would open this fall. The company contracts with K12 Inc., a for-profit company, to provide the online instruction.

The district said in a release on its website Monday that no decision will be made and no action will be taken at the meeting on March 19.

Below is a summary of the anticipated next steps following the meeting next week:

• The board must vote to accept or reject the proposal within 30 days after the March 19th meeting.
• Once the Board of Education has voted, the board must submit a report to the Illinois State Board of Education. 
• If the board votes to approve the proposal, ISBE will undertake a final review and determine whether to approve the charter school. 
• If the board votes to deny the proposed charter school, the report must be submitted to ISBE and the State Charter School Commission, along with an explanation of the reasons the application was denied.
