Batavia Electric Peak Alert Issued, Goes Until 6 p.m. Today

The heat is making Batavia keep a close eye on its electric usage. Please use electronics sparingly this afternoon, July 6.

It's the second straight afternoon of trying to go off the grid for Batavians.

The City of Batavia has issued an electric peak alert for today, Friday, July 6, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Please delay your electric usage as much as possible this afternoon. Turn off and unplug any unused lights and electric appliances.

Today's alert is due to local heat and humidity. It's currently 101 degrees in Batavia on July 6, with weak winds and humidity at 40 percent, according to the National Weather Service.

Heat and humidity were the cause of Thursday's peak alert in the city, according to Robert Rogde, Batavia Electric Superintendent.

"Present forecasts indicate that next week will be a little cooler, which would give us a break from the alerts," Rogde said in an online message.

Temperatures begin to drop slightly on Sunday with a high of 88, then a high of 90 on Monday. Saturday has a high of 100 degrees.

Cooling Center Still Open

Due to the extreme heat, the City of Batavia's Cooling Center will be open for the benefit of the elderly, families with small children, and other vulnerable residents.

The Cooling Center is located at , 100 N. Island Ave., in downtown Batavia. While the Center is open 24 hours a day, it is unable to provide sleeping accommodations. When you arrive at the center, please check in at the front desk of the Police Department.

Cool is the Keyword

Here are some things to keep in mind with the alert in place:

  • If you are out in the heat, please be careful and drink fluids. 
  • Make sure your pets have plenty of water.
  • Please remember to check on your neighbors and relatives. 
  • Raise your thermostat a couple of degrees so the air conditioning won't kick on right away.
  • Cool your house down overnight and keep the shade closed during the day when possible.
