2nd Batavia Electric Peak Alert Issued, Goes Until 5 p.m. Sept. 2

The heat is making Batavia keep a close eye on its electric usage. Please use electronics sparingly this afternoon, Sept. 2.

It's the second straight afternoon of trying to go off the grid for Batavians.

The has issued an electric peak alert for today, Friday, September 2, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Please delay your electric usage as much as possible this afternoon. Turn off and unplug any unused lights and electric appliances.

Today's alert is due to local heat and humidity. Highs are expected to be in the lower 90s today with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, according to the National Weather Service. 

Heat and humidity were the cause of  in the city, according to Robert Rogde, Batavia Electric Superintendent.

"This could be the last alert for this year," Rogde said in an online message. "It is getting late in the calendar for really hot weather. I want to thank everyone for participating this year and thank you for all the good comments on the program. We are planing to continue the 'Peak Alert Program' in 2012."

Here's some things to keep in mind with the alert in place:

  • If you are out in the heat, please be careful and drink fluids. 
  • Make sure your pets have plenty of water.
  • Please remember to check on your neighbors and relatives. 
  • Raise your thermostat a couple of degrees so the air conditioning won't kick on right away.
  • Cool your house down overnight and keep the shade closed during the day when possible.
