Boy Dies After Car Crash in Western Kane County Wednesday

An 11-year-old boy is dead after a fatal crash Wednesday night in western Kane County, the Sheriff's Office said.

The boy, a Sycamore resident, was a back-seat passenger in a Chevy Cavalier that was rear-ended by a Ford Expedition sport-utility vehicle. The crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Route 64 west of Peplow Road in unincorporated Virgil Township, according to a Sheriff's Office statement.

The driver of the Cavalier, 21-year-old Nicholas Weber, is the brother of the boy. Weber, his brother and an 18-year-old front seat passenger were transported to a hospital after the crash.

The driver of the Expedition, 28-year-old Benjamin Black of Sycamore, was issued two citations after the crash. 

"The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into this crash and have not determined if the use of drugs, alcohol or texting played a role in this crash," the statement said.

The roadways were covered by blowing and drifting snow at the time of the crash. It appears that all parties were wearing their seat belts, the statement said.

Crash Narrative

Three vehicles were stopped westbound on Route 64 due to a traffic backup for an accident about a mile west of the fatal crash scene, the Sheriff's Office said. A 1999 Ford Expedition headed westbound on Route 64 failed to stop for the other vehicles and struck the rear of the Chevy Cavalier. The Cavalier then struck a 2006 Buick Lucerne.

The Buick went off the roadway on the north shoulder and the Cavalier continued forward and struck the rear of a 2004 Hyundai.

The three occupants of the Cavalier were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital after the crash.

"The back seat passenger, an 11-year-old Sycamore resident, was pronounced deceased at the hospital," the statement said.

Weber and the front-seat passenger were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The drivers of the other vehicles, both 55-year-old males from Sycamore, were the sole occupants of their own vehicles. They were treated and released at the scene.

Benjamin Black, the driver of the Expedition, was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. No other citations were issued.

Route 64 was closed between Peplow and Fabris roads for about four hours during the crash investigation.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash.
