'Tis the Season for Retail Theft at Kohl's

The following information was supplied by the Batavia Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

One of my favorite former bosses once wisely advised us to NEVER use 'tis the season in a headline. It's hackneyed, cliched, overdone and often inappropriate to the story.

It's great advice and yet I can't help myself, apparently, since 'tis the season for retail theft in Batavia, and more specifically, at Kohl's.

If I had any advice to share with criminals, this season or any, I'd say don't try to steal from Kohl's, because you'll get caught. Hardly a week goes by when a Kohl's retail-theft arrest doesn't appear in the blotter.

Here are the three latest:

Juveniles Stopped, 1 Charged


Three juvenile subjects were observed removing items of clothing from Kohl’s, 251 N. Randall Road, without paying for them, according to a report filed at 4:52 p.m. Dec. 14. Two juvenile subjects were released without charges. A third subject, from Glen Ellyn, was taken into custody and charged with retail theft. The offender was released to his mother.

$263 in Clothing Taken

Batavia police arrested Maria Ortiz, 41, of St. Charles on charges of retail theft at Kohl’s, 251 N. Randal Road, according to a report filed at 7:18 p.m. Dec. 11. An estimated $263 in clothing was taken from the store, reports said. Ortiz posted $150 bond and has a court date of Jan. 14.

Man Tries to Take $129 Camera

Batavia police arrested Michael Noble, 45, of Aurora on charges of retail theft at Kohl’s, 251 N. Randall Road, according to a report filed at 3:17 p.m. Dec. 9. Reports said Noble tried to take a camera valued at $129 and had a prior retail theft. He was processed and transported to the Kane County Jail for bond call.
