UPDATE: School Bus Crash Sends 11 to Hospital With Minor Injuries

The bus ended up sideways in a ditch in southwestern Kane County. Illinois Central School Bus owns the vehicle involved, according to the county Sheriff's Office.

A school bus on Friday veered off a southwest Kane County road and went into a ditch, sending two adults and nine children to the hospital.

The one-vehicle crash happened on Granart Road near the Granart and Camp Dean roads intersection. Emergency crews responded to the crash at about 8:10 a.m. Friday, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

The bus driver and three of the nine students on the bus were transported to Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora by ambulance. All of their injuries were minor, the Sheriff's Office said.

Six other students and an adult monitor, also on the bus, were transported by another school bus to Delnor Hospital in Geneva. None of their injuries will require an overnight stay in the hospital. Several of the children went to school after leaving the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said.

There were a total of 11 people on the bus. Six of the students were special needs students. The bus was on its way to Krejci Academy, a specialized school in Naperville.

Most of the students were from the Sandwich area, according to the Sheriff's Office. All of the students wore seat belts at the time of the crash.

What Happened?

The bus was traveling east on Granart Road and left the roadway for an unknown reason on the south side of Granart. When the bus went off the road, it went into a small ditch then rolled onto its side, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The speed limit on the stretch of road where the crash occurred is 55 mph.

The crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.  If there are charges issued, they will be announced.

The agencies that responded to this incident include the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Sugar Grove Police, and the Big Rock and Sugar Grove fire departments.

At this time the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the identities of the parties involved in the crash.

About the Bus

The bus in the incident is a 2006 International School Bus. It is owned by Illinois Central School Bus Company, which transports most of the bused students in and some in Geneva as well.

Illinois Central came under heavy criticism from Batavia parents during the first few weeks of this school year, when at all.

The scrutiny intensified in September when was left on a bus and mistakenly taken up to the company's St. Charles bus facility instead of being dropped off at school.
