REPORT: Batavia Woman's Alleged Love Scheme Has Day In Court

Janna St. James of Batavia is accused of fraud in an online romance. Arguments for the case were heard in the Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday, according to media reports.

A case against a Batavia woman and her fake online romance was heard in Springfield on Wednesday.

Paula Bonhomme of California is suing Janna St. James of Batavia for emotional distress allegedly caused by St. James’ portrayal of a fake male firefighter online. Oral arguments in this case were heard in Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Daily Herald reports.

St. James is in online chats with Bonhomme, and she created several other online personas to corroborate the story. She later killed off the fake firefighter identity, much to Bonhomme’s dismay.

St. James’ attorney on Wednesday argued that the is only applicable to business relationships, the Daily Herald’s story said. Daliah Saper, Bonhomme’s attorney, said that she and Bonhomme want to prevent cons, and that fraud in non-business relationships should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
