The National Weather Service-Chicago has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Northern Illinios area, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 29, 2012.)
This comes in the wake of two house fires reported in Geneva on Memorial Day. The Daily Herald reports fires were put out in houses in the 100 block of Wall Street and the 200 block of South Harrison Street. The Harrison Street fire was reported at about 5 p.m. and the Wall Street fire at about 6:05 p.m.
The Red Flag Warning means that "critical fire weather conditions" are either occuring now or will shortly, the NWS-Chicago says.
In this case, we're expecting strong winds, low relative humidity and abnormally dry condtions in Northern Illinois.
The relative humidity will be from 20 to 25 percent and west winds will be coming in at 15 to 20 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph.
That combinationn will create "explosive fire growth," the warning says.
The Geneva Police Department provides fire-prevention tips on its website. It's also a good time to remember the for your fire pit and to remind kids especially that this is not the time to be experimenting with illegal fireworks. There were a few reports of fireworks detonations on the Tri-Com scanner Monday.
