Police Arrest Batavia Subway Robbery Suspect

The Kane Co. State's Attorney's Office authorized charges in connection to the November Subway robberies in Batavia and North Aurora. The man charged has lived in Batavia and St. Charles.

Two police departments on Thursday announced charges against a man in connection with the 2011 Batavia and North Aurora Subway robberies.

and North Aurora Police each charged Douglas A. Kelley, 27, with one count of Armed Robbery with a dangerous weapon, a Class X Felony. The police departments sent out separate press releases Thursday afternoon.

Batavia's charge is in connection to a , and North Aurora's charge is in connection to a . The Subways involved are each located along Randall Road and are about 3 miles apart from each other.

Kelley is being held at the Kane County Correctional Center, according to Batavia's release. A judge set Kelley’s bond at $300,000, North Aurora's release said.

Kelley told Batavia Police that he lives in the 1100 block of Lorlyn Circle in Batavia. North Aurora Police has a different address listed for Kelley in St. Charles. The police departments on Thursday could not immediately explain the discrepancy.

If convicted, Kelley could face six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Kelley is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

How They Got Him

Kelley was detained in Elgin regarding a bank robbery investigation on Jan. 18. Leads and information were developed, according to Batavia Police.

Kelley was charged with the robbery of the Subway store in Batavia after interviews with Elgin Police, the F.B.I. and Batavia police investigators.

Batavia Robbery

The Batavia robbery happened at about 8:40 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Subway located at 13 S. Randall Road in the same lot as the Batavia Jewel-Osco.

A white male displayed a handgun, demanded and received cash from the register, police said.

This was Batavia's full description of the suspect:

  • White male
  • 25-35 years old
  • About 5'10"
  • Medium build
  • Wore a blue/gray wool stocking cap with a light colored stripe near the top  and earflaps with tassels, sunglasses, a blue puffy jacket, black pants and gloves
  • Displayed a black semi-automatic handgun
  • Spoke English, no accent noted

North Aurora Robbery

Officers responded to the Subway at 53 S. Randall Road at about 8:09 p.m. on Nov. 28. A single suspect entered the Subway restaurant, armed with a black semi-automatic handgun, and demanded cash from the register. He pointed the gun at an employee, took an undetermined amount of money, and fled the area.

The suspect was described as a white male in his mid-late 20’s, approx. 5’11” – 6’0”, with short, scruffy facial hair (i.e. unshaven). Facial hair was a light to medium brown. Hair color was unknown (hidden by knit hat). He was wearing a gray puffy coat, knit hat, blue iridescent (slightly mirrored) sunglasses, and gloves.
