Police Investigate Shooting on Fermilab Property

The incident involved an off-duty police officer, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office has an open investigation into a shooting that happened Saturday on Fermilab's campus.

The shooting incident involved an off-duty police officer from an unnamed department, according to a press release. The Sheriff's Office was notified of the incident on Saturday morning.

The officer in the incident allegedly witnessed a hit-and-run crash in the area of Route 59 and Dale Avenue in West Chicago. The off-duty officer then followed the offending vehicle while in a personal vehicle, the release said.

The offender vehicle and the officer ended up somewhere on the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory campus east of Batavia.

While on the Fermilab property, an encounter ensued where the off-duty officer exited the vehicle and confronted the occupants of the other vehicle.

The officer then fired shots at the other vehicle, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.

One of the occupants in the back seat of the offending vehicle was struck by a round. This person was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

No further information is being released by the Sheriff's Office, pending further investigation of the incident.

No charges were filed as of Sunday afternoon.

A Fermilab spokesperson confirmed Monday morning that no one from Fermilab was actually involved in this incident.
