POLICE: Chicago Man Accused of Stabbing Co-Worker in Batavia

A 54-year-old Chicago man faces an attempted murder charge after he stabbed his co-worker Monday morning in Batavia, police said.

Calvin M. Hayes, of the 300 block of North Pine Street in Chicago, stabbed a 45-year-old Maywood man, according to a press release.

The stabbing incident occurred in a Suncast Corporation parking lot, 701 N. Kirk Road. Officers were dispatched to the scene at 6:50 a.m. Monday, the press release said.

The stabbing occurred as a result of a verbal argument that turned physical after their work shifts ended, according to police. The stabbed co-worker received medical assistance at the scene from paramedics and was sent to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

How the Stabbing Happened

Hayes and the co-worker had just finished their shifts and were going to return home to Chicago, the press release said. At this point, the two men were in the same vehicle.

While in the vehicle, Hayes and the co-worker had a verbal argument that turned physical. This is when Hayes stabbed his co-worker in the side of the neck, police said.

The stabbed co-worker exited the vehicle and went into Suncast to summon assistance. Officers located the injured co-worker in an employee area of Suncast with an apparent stab wound to his neck.

The Maywood man received lacerations to the left side of his ear and neck area. His injuries were non-life threatening and he was subsequently released from the hospital, police said.

Male Suspect In Custody

Officers located Hayes in the parking lot and took him into custody without incident.

Batavia Police detectives contacted the Kane County State's Attorney's Office and received authorization for the following charges on Hayes:

• One count of First Degree Attempted Murder—Probability of Death

• One count of Aggravated Battery—Great Bodily Harm

• One count of Aggravated Battery—Deadly Weapon

The murder charge is a Class X felony. The aggravated battery charges are Class 3 felonies.

This is the second serious reported stabbing in Batavia in less than a month. On April 30, a at the Batavia Apartments complex, police said. The man was pronounced dead at Delnor Hospital and the woman faces two counts of first-degree murder.
