POLICE: Batavia Man Charged With Attempted Armed Robbery Downtown

A 20-year-old Batavia man faces an attempted armed robbery charge after an incident early Tuesday morning on Batavia Avenue, police said.

Zachary Schulz, of the 700 block of Houston Street in Batavia, told detectives he was the offender in the bank incident and turned himself in Tuesday afternoon, according to a Batavia Police Department press release.

The attempted robbery occurred near the ATMs at , 130 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia, the release said. Officers were dispatched to the scene at 2:03 a.m. Tuesday.

A 42-year-old Batavia woman said she was conducting an ATM transaction in the drive-thru lanes when she saw an armed man approach her vehicle.

The woman was unharmed and was able to drive away from the scene. She was able to provide police with a physical description of the man.

Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the man.

Man Turns Himself In

At 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a man walked into the lobby, 100 N. Island Ave. The man, Zachary Schulz, told police he was the one in the incident at the bank on South Batavia Avenue, and he wished to turn himself in to authorities.

A subsequent interview with Schulz corroborated the events as detailed by the woman in the drive-thru lane, police said.

Batavia Police contacted the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, who authorized the following charges on Schulz:

• One count of Attempted Armed Robbery (Class 1 Felony)

If convicted of a Class 1 Felony, Schulz could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, according to sentencing guidelines in the state statute.

Schulz is currently being held at the Batavia Police Department. He awaits a bond call hearing scheduled for today, Wednesday, July 11.

Schulz is a Batavia High School graduate, according to his Facebook page.

A phone message left at a listed number for the Schulz residence on Houston Street was not immediately returned Tuesday night.
