No One Hurt in Batavia House Fire Caused by Dishwasher
Fire officials estimate the damage at $30,000 from the Friday-afternoon blaze.
The Batavia Fire Department, aided by departments throughout the area, doused a house fire Friday afternoon that started in the kitchen and caused $30,000 damage.
Thankfully, no people were home and no one was hurt. Two dogs were successfully rescued from the home.
The fire in the 931 Woodland Ave. home was reported at around 3:16 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, after a passerby heard the smoke detector activated and called Batavia officials.
When firefighters arrived, light smoke was showing and it was quickly determined that it was in the kitchen area. Officials later discovered that the cause of the fire was a malfunctioning dishwasher.
One of the reasons the fire didn't spread faster was that it melted
a water line that extinguished most of fire, according to a report provided by the Batavia Fire Department.
Officials estimated $20,000 in damage to the home and $10,000 in damage to contents of the home.
Five trucks, two medics, two command vehicles and a total of 33 personnel were at the scene, with mutual aid provided by Geneva, St. Charles, Elburn, North Aurora and Fermilab fire departments.
