The boy was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. His car collided with the crossover SUV of a 55-year-old woman from unincorporated Hampshire. Her vehicle, in turn, struck the car of a 21-year-old man from unincorporated Elgin.

The intersection was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management assisted with traffic control at the scene.

Crash Narrative: Missed Stop Sign, SUV Flips

The boy was headed north on Stevens Road in a 2002 Chevy Malibu approaching the intersection with McDonald Road. The north- and southbound traffic on Stevens Road has stop signs, but the traffic on McDonald Road does not.

The Malibu failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection, where it collided with the Hampshire woman's 2003 Nissan Murano that was traveling east on McDonald Road.

The Murano flipped over and landed on its roof, the Sheriff's Office said.

As the Murano flipped over, it struck the Elgin man's 2005 Chevy Impala that was traveling west on McDonald Road.

Drivers Injured

The woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

The Elgin man was transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries.

The boy was taken to Delnor Hospital with minor injuries.

Crash Findings

All of the drivers were wearing their seat belts. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

The boy told Sheriff's deputies that his brakes went out prior to the crash, but deputies continue to investigate that claim.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Crash Reconstruction Team members.
