A Kane County man died Wednesday morning after his motorcycle collided with the side of a semi on Kirk Road in Geneva Township, police said.

The man collided with the semi's trailer as the semi was turning onto northbound Kirk Road from Cherry Lane. The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Pat Gengler, Kane Co. Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The man's name was initially withheld pending notification of his family, Gengler said.

Kirk Road was reopened to thru traffic at about 10:20 a.m. after being blocked for about 3.5 hours between Rt. 38 and Fabyan Parkway. The road was blocked off while officials investigated the crash.

Crash Narrative

The man was north of Kirk and Cherry driving his Suzuki motorcycle southbound on Kirk, according to the County Sheriff's Office.

The man failed to stop, and his motorcycle collided with the semi's trailer. The man was thrown from the motorcycle in the middle of the roadway. The motorcycle continued southbound on Kirk Road without a driver. The cycle finally rolled and stopped about 200 yards south of the Kirk-Cherry intersection and east of Kirk Road.

The motorcycle appeared to be moving at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, the Sheriff's Office said.

The driver of the semi was not harmed but was shaken by the crash and death of the cyclist. The semi was parked north of the Kirk Road-Cherry Lane intersection after the crash.

The following agencies assisted with the crash response:

  • Kane County Sheriff's Department
  • Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team
  • Geneva Fire Department
  • Illinois State Police
  • Geneva Police (traffic control)
  • (traffic control)

The Kane County Sheriff's Office headed this crash investigation because the Kirk Road-Cherry Lane intersection is unincorporated, Gengler said.

Saw this on the way in this morn... must've just happened. Poor dude... no helmet. The bike was at least a quarter of mile away from the body. At first it looked like a pedestrian got hit.
Mike Erickson August 15, 2012 at 02:53 PM
It was unsettling to see the body lying in the middle of the road as I drive by. You could see that he was thrown right out of his shoes. Not a good way to start a morning. I feel sorry for his family, friends and the semi driver.

@ Sgt He was wearing a helmet.
Cora August 15, 2012 at 05:31 PM
Did you really need to go into such graphic detail? Excuse me, "not a good way to start a morning"??? Wow, could you be a little more self centered, selfish and selfless? I bet you haven't stopped talking about it and how it affected your 'day'. Have some compassion and sincere respect if you know anything about the meaning of these words.
Mike Erickson August 15, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Cora, yes the detail is needed and I should haver gone into even more of it. I am also a motorcycle rider and as I feel for this man and his family, people need to know that motorcycles are out there, drivers need to watch out for them, as well as riders need to ride carefully and with respect. If more people knew the graphic details, maybe some of these accidents would not happen. Also, you seem like a very angry, self centered and bitter individual. I'll pray for you as well as the family.

I agree with Mike, however I believe most motorcycle accidents happen due to the fault of the motorcyclist - as was the case in this morning's accident. Just because you are driving a smaller vehicle that can get around cars does not give motorcyclists the right to weave all around traffic and speed excessively. It is rare to see a motorcyclists driving safely these days and they need to chill out.

"I believe that most motorcycle accidents happen due to the fault of the motorcyclist". What support do you have for this? Unless you have some authority for this, my advice would be to keep your ANECDOTAL information to yourself. There have been several motorcycle accidents reported in this area where the fault was the car driver. In fact, some teenager killed a motorcyclist on that very road while making an unannounced u-turn last month. Another motorist made an unsignalled left turn and killed an oncoming rider in Naperville last month as well.

I apologize... I see a lot of bickering on this and the updated story (mainly coming from just two idiots) which is sad. I was there literally a minute after it happened... our traffic drove by about 10 feet from the poor guy. I saw debris, shoes and the kid lying there uncovered... I saw NO helmet. It doesn't matter. Blatent disregard for the red light and the speed limit are stupid reasons to lose your life. I felt really bad all around after seeing this morning and now some of you are just making me angry. I still feel bad for the semi driver.

You need to calm down and take your blood pressure medicine. I was simply stating my OPINION...look it up in the dictionary. I'm entitled to one just like the rest of the world. Wait, you're a lawyer? Figures.

this is someone's child. did no one stop for this boy ???? learn lessons instead of pointing fingers. look twice, bikes are everywhere. do we really need all these details ???? and photos !?!?! one year, one month, 18 days ago it was MY SON who was laying in the middle of the road having people drive past. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOUR CARELESS WORDS HURT.

Your right and this kid young man had i belive 14 tickets in the last 2 years on the bike from speeding, running red lights, failure to yeirld, excesive speeds and careless driving so it is hard to feel bad for someone who appearently wanted to die.
John September 18, 2012 at 07:53 PM
The words need to be spoken to remind others not to do as he did. It was released he had roughly 2 dozen tickets on this bike in under 2 years. The message is drive like a moron and you will loose your life. Each situation is different but this kid appearently wanted to die or was menatlly challenged and shouldnt have been allowed to continue driving on the roads.
