'Injured' Driver Disappears After 3-Vehicle Accident on Randall Road

A three-vehicle accident with an apparent injury turned into a little bit of a whodunnit after the purported driver was taken to the hospital after the crash.
According to Batavia police reports, the front of a Dodge Neon driven by "Crystal Vega," 22, of Chicago collided with the rear of a Ford F150 driven by Derek Dinino, 24, of Lansing, IL, which collided with the rear of Mazda CX-7 driven by Luma Webster, 26, of North Aurora around 6:10 p.m. Oct. 11 on North Randall Road about 100 feet south of Mill Street.
Webster’s Mazda had been stopped in traffic, northbound on North Randall Road and Dinino’s Ford F150 was stopped behind it when the Neon “failed to reduce speed upon approaching stopped traffic” and ran into the F150, which rolled forward into the Mazda.

Vega was transported to Delnor Hospital by Batavia medics for complaints of pain, but when the reporting officer arrived at Delnor, he was informed that Vega left the hospital without treatment.
The officer attempted to contact Vega, but her phone was disconnected. A subsequent check revealed that the “the information provided on scene was invalid” and that Brittni Ervin, 21, a passenger in Vega’s vehicle, was the owner of the vehicle.

When police contacted Ervin, she gave police a telephone number but police could not reach Vega. The report said Ervin was “not cooperative.” Batavia detectives attempted to identify the driver, with negative results.
The officer issued Ervin a state citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and for permitting an unauthorized person to drive.
