Flash Flood Warning Until 5:30 P.M., More Storms Coming

Flooding expected in Batavia, Aurora, DeKalb, DuPage County and other areas.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for portions of 14 Chicago-area counties, including southern Kane County, until 5:30 p.m. today, June 9.

At about 3 p.m., flash flooding still occurred across the area with many roads impacted by high water, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms are not over yet. There is an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday evening and after midnight, with temperatures in the low 50s.

An overall Flash Flood watch remains in effect for Kane and 15 other Chicago-area counties from midnight tonight through Friday morning.

A thunderstorm system will develop across Iowa this evening, then move east to southern Wisconsin and far northern Illinois into Friday morning. If these storms develop as predicted, there is a potential for several inches of rainfall within the watch area.

Locations that will likely experience flooding if they haven't already include Batavia, Aurora, DeKalb and towns in DuPage such as Downers Grove and Elmhurst.

The area most likely to be hit hard is still far northern Illinois, but the watch extends into the south due to residual effects from earlier rainfall.

Rainfall rates with heavy storms will likely exceed one inch per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Do not cross water-logged bridges, dips and other areas. NEVER try to cross a flowing stream, even if it's a small one, by foot or vehicle for danger of getting swept away. Do not underestimate the power of moving water.

Runoff from recent and future storms will cause flooding of:

  • small creeks and streams
  • highways
  • viaducts and underpasses
  • rural roads, farmlands along creek banks
  • streams and other low-lying areas
