Batavian Says He Was Fleeced of $14,000 Wedding Ring Set Via Fraudulent PayPal Account

A Batavia resident tells police he sold a $14,000 wedding ring set over the Internet, and never received the payment.

Batavia police are investigating a case in which $14,000 in wedding rings were sold over the Internet and payment was never made.

Police reports said a resident of the 500 block of South Harrison Street was fleeced out of a payment when the purchaser used a fraudulent PayPal account.

Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said the case is still under investigation, but the victim apparently posted an Internet ad to sell a wedding-ring set. An unknown respondent agreed to pay the $14,000

"The rings were sent to the offender, and the offender never paid for the rings," Mazza said.

He said Batavia police officers are working with PayPal to try to discover the identity and whereabouts of the offender.
