Batavia Township Man Dies After Being Shot By Sheriff's Sergeant

The Kane County Sheriff's Office responds to a report of a man making suicidal threats who then points a rifle at deputies.

A resident of rural Batavia brandished a rifle at Kane County sheriff’s deputies Monday morning and then was shot by a sergeant. The man died of his injuries in the evening.

Authorities are still investigating the shooting, which occurred about 11:40 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at 3S303 Elfstrom Trail in rural Batavia.

According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office release, deputies were called to the Batavia Township address after a report of a male making suicidal threats. Officers were advised the man may have fired a gun.

Deputies arrived to find a 52-year-old male with a rifle who lives at the residence. He was outside the home when officers arrived, the release states.

According to the release, the deputies attempted to get the man to drop the rifle, but he refused to do so and then pointed it at the deputies. A sheriff’s sergeant then shot the man. Batavia paramedics transported him to Mercy Center Hospital, where he was reported by the release to be in critical condition.

Later in the evening, the Sheriff's Office issued a second release, stating that the man had died about 7:30 p.m.

No other persons were injured as a result of this incident.

The Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police are reviewing the incident, the release states, and no charges have been filed at this time.

The release states that the sergeant who shot the man is a 20-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office. As is typical in officer-involved shootings, he has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.

This incident remains under investigation.
