Batavia Responds to Two Fires Tuesday

Fire #1 was an afternoon machine blaze; fire #2 was inside a Chevrolet Aveo engine.

The Batavia Fire Department responded to two eastside fires that happened at different times on Tuesday. The fires took place less than half a mile from each other, and no injuries were reported in either incident.

A crew first responded to a fire alarm at 1:35 p.m. at 475 N. Kirk Rd., the location of a Curwood-Bemis manufacturing facility. The fire was inside a machine but was already extinguished when the crew arrived, according to the department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The blaze began in a machine room that uses the chemical acetone with heat to bond layers of plastic.

The fire department estimates $10,000 in content damages.

Fire crews removed smoke and chemical vapors from the affected areas. The building was turned back over to plant managers without any problems.

The fire department credited the facility’s fire suppression system with curbing property damage and providing early warnings to employees and first responders.

Fire on Four Wheels

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:34 p.m. Tuesday to Kevin’s Auto Repair, 1451 Lathem St. They found a 2004 Chevrolet Aveo with a fire in the engine compartment.

 The fire was contained to the compartment but the vehicle was a total loss with a $2,000 damage estimate.

A total of 12 personnel were at the scene of the machine fire; four personnel responded to the vehicle fire.
